Here’s the original description of the character from the book:
In one of the cages, decorated with red flags, an island dog was ferociously gnawing on a bone. A small blunt-headed head sat on a muscular neck, sloping into the body. The dog’s reddish, almost red, coarse fur on its back turned into black or white quills, with stripes of the same colors running between them. In its short snout were hidden yellow terrifying teeth, and the jaws were so powerful that they could easily snap an elk’s thigh.
A freckled youth, through the crowd, attempted to poke the animal with a pointed stick, glancing warily at the barker-owner who was praising his dog in the other direction. Instantly noticing the foreign object between the bars, the beast turned around, shaking the entire cage—the crowd recoiled—and pressed the stick down with its massive paw. Pricking up its round, bear-like ears, the dog watched as the unlucky teenager unsuccessfully tugged at his weapon, but upon hearing the owner’s shout, he ran away. Of course, the creature could not understand the situation and even less find it amusing, but it laughed, baring its fangs.
